AI in Reinsurance: From Tool Adoption to Operating Model Redesign

  • AI is already changing how reinsurers work. But are organisations simply using it to make existing processes faster, or are they ready to rethink how their businesses operate?

  • As AI tools become increasingly accessible, the challenge for reinsurance leaders is shifting. The question is no longer simply whether to adopt AI, but where it can deliver meaningful value and what that means for the future operating model of a reinsurer.

  • These questions were at the heart of a recent D2A2 Reinsurance Roundtable in Zurich, organised in partnership with Buondrius. Bringing together 13 participants from the Swiss reinsurance community, the discussion offered an opportunity to compare experiences, challenge assumptions and explore what comes next.

  • While tools such as Microsoft Copilot are already seeing relevant adoption, with Power Automate and Claude Code also mentioned, there remains considerable uncertainty about how best to translate AI capabilities into business value.

  • The roundtable reached no clear consensus on what the future operating model of a reinsurer should look like. But it highlighted an important emerging question: Will competitive advantage increasingly depend not on who has access to AI, but on who can most effectively redesign their organisation around what AI makes possible?

  • The full report explores the key themes, insights and questions emerging from the discussion, offering reinsurance leaders an opportunity to reflect on their own approach as the industry moves beyond AI adoption towards operating model redesign
